We can confidently assess this 212 page book as another valuable reference source closely associated with the Hill End & Tambaroora Goldfields.
Our volunteer, Karen Bates, has spent more than 3 years in developing this thematic record based on the written proof of the resilience, resourcefulness and ingenuity of our ancestors. She, and graphic designer Nicole Cameron, have cooked, photographed and eaten most of the recipes submitted by the keen descendants, and have lived to tell the tale!
This publication brings together personal collections, presenting these family histories for future generations in an elegantly bound A4 hardback edition. Showcasing domestic life in the goldfields it highlights the significant role of food, detailing the types of produce that were cultivated, grown, foraged, and farmed locally.
Women’s work was key to making life enjoyable. Mutton, potatoes and bread weren’t the only foods on the table. These women demonstrated creativity in an isolated regional area. The demographic diversity encompasses a broad spectrum of cultural backgrounds and socioeconomic levels, which contributes to a varied array of ingredients, culinary methods, and gastronomic results.
The archival record created is geographically unique to one of the richest goldfields in NSW. This resource will be an easy read, stories are recorded, recipes are given with full instructions and illustrations that will appeal to the cultural researcher, the family historian and the cook.
The layout presents an easy-to- read style, the recipes are clearly defined, and the family stories are just enough to make the reader wonder how on earth they managed to do so much with so little, considering the isolation, lack of electricity or refrigeration and a Woolworths close by.
Whatever your association with Hill End, family history or culinary delights this beautifully presented full colour volume will cater to all tastes. A perfect gift for future generations.
This project has been financially assisted by Bathurst Regional Council Heritage Funding and Hill End & Tambaroora Gathering Group.
